We've had our 4th & 5th weeks of CC. I'm liking it more and more each week. The girls are always excited to go, and always have positive things to say about their morning! I'm starting to understand the Classical model more and how beneficial it is. I came across this:
"Classical Education helps children learn facts so they have some touch points for cognitive connection when they are able to process the real information on their own without needing an abridged, simplified, and smoothed over version."
This makes sense to me. It's about how and when our kids are taught. We're talking developmentally appropriate education! Hallelujah. What a concept!
In elementary school, they are so good at memorizing facts through songs and chants and rhymes. This is the time to "fill 'em with facts." And really it's just a super fun way to learn :)
Later, in middle school, kids are more independent thinkers- and more argumentative #shocker. This is when they are READY to think critically and analyze deeper. They want to know, and are ready to understand, the "why", the logic. Finally, the rhetoric stage focuses on communication, which includes skills like persuasive arguing and effective writing.
With all that being said, I really want to make more of an effort to incorporate the memory work into our week. I ordered History of the World - the audio version, too!- and I'm looking forward to using it. We are not using it to prep for a test. We are reading for enjoyment and to learn about history!
The girls were beyond bummed that we did not have CC on Columbus Day. I'm really surprised they love it so much! They ask how many more days til we go back, and why we can't go every day :)
I'm so happy to read this! If you ever want to talk classical education, or CC, I'm down!
