...but I refuse to let it!
I feel like Time 4 Learning is moving pretty fast through math. In hindsight I should have spent some time reviewing 3rd grade, especially memorizing the times tables. I could have easily done this for the few weeks of CC when the math memory work was skip counting. Whoops.
Anyway, Audrey is now knee deep in multiplying and dividing huge numbers and I'm not a fan. NEW APPROACH!
I handed her a calculator and walked her through solving the problems (especially the dividing with remainders!) I have her write everything down, we check her answers together, and she does understand the reasoning behind the steps. That is good enough for a 9 year old!
After this division unit we move on to fractions and decimals. Oh joy. You'd better believe we're keeping the calculator out for that mess.
Besides, teaching her to use the calculator frees up more time for this:
|
A little STEM time! |
|
Building ramps |
|
Staying up late to sketch... |
|
...and waking up early to finish (Dad took this at 6 am!) |
Audrey's teachers, preK-3rd grade, have done a phenomenal job of helping her develop a firm foundation in number sense. I am seeing evidence of that every time she calculates things in her head. I have no problems taking it down a notch to spend time on simple multiplication and division. The joy of home school :)
