Guest Post by Audrey

When Audrey found out I was writing a blog about our homeschooling journey, she wanted to start one, too! I thought starting her out as a guest poster was a good start ;) Hi there, it’s Audrey! Today I will be talking about how much I love homeschooling! On Mondays we go to CC. We sing about all our topics. CC makes a Monday fun! My friends and I always eat together in a classroom. We started a business called The CC Kid’s Club. On rainy weather days, a lot of the little kids play inside but there is nothing to do. So, we decided to make it fun! My friends and I teach kids, while Abby and her friends basically do play time. For the rest of the week we do this program called Time for Learning. I spend up to 2 hours on it every day! I like Time for Learning  because they give the best quizzes. That's all for today, if any questions email me at acburns1224@gmail.com                                                       Bye-Bye! *She will be answering questions on v

Home school means...

...taking our own field trips ...enjoying nature ...more date nights ...more time at the Library ...bringing our learning everywhere ...more one-on-one time with Abs ...restful nights and no-alarm mornings ...more bonding ...being there for all the drop-offs and pick-ups ...learning at the grocery store ...more time with this sweet face ...doing math before bed because you WANT to!  ...lots of selfies ...time for fort-building ...a happy mom/teacher ...more time for arts & crafts ...more time for dress up ...being more carefree ...more relaxing Soccer Saturdays ...creating a "kid's club" at CC for the littles ...more goofing off I get asked a lot about how home school is going. Where do I even begin? We're only 2 months in and it has been the best decision we have ever made for our girls. Sleep training is a close second ;) We don't have it all together. I const

4th grade math is KILLING me

...but I refuse to let it! I feel like Time 4 Learning is moving pretty fast through math. In hindsight I should have spent some time reviewing 3rd grade, especially memorizing the times tables. I could have easily done this for the few weeks of CC when the math memory work was skip counting. Whoops. Anyway, Audrey is now knee deep in multiplying and dividing huge numbers and I'm not a fan. NEW APPROACH! I handed her a calculator and walked her through solving the problems (especially the dividing with remainders!) I have her write everything down, we check her answers together, and she does understand the reasoning behind the steps. That is good enough for a 9 year old! After this division unit we move on to fractions and decimals. Oh joy. You'd better believe we're keeping the calculator out for that mess. Besides, teaching her to use the calculator frees up more time for this: A little STEM time! Building ramps Staying up late to sketch... ...and wa

Classical Education- we're here for it!

We've had our 4th & 5th weeks of CC. I'm liking it more and more each week. The girls are always excited to go, and always have positive things to say about their morning! I'm starting to understand the Classical model more and how beneficial it is. I came across this: "Classical Education helps children learn facts so they have some touch points for cognitive connection when they are able to process the real information on their own without needing an abridged, simplified, and smoothed over version."  This makes sense to me. It's about how and when our kids are taught. We're talking  developmentally appropriate  education! Hallelujah. What a concept!  In elementary school, they are so good at memorizing facts through songs and chants and rhymes. This is the time to "fill 'em with facts." And really it's just a super fun way to learn :) Later, in middle school, kids are more independent thinkers- and more argumentative #sho
